Kjeld Aamodt surfs and scuba dives, speaks fluent Spanish, plays jazz guitar and bass, and recently got his private pilot’s license. But for his profession, Kjeld chose orthodontics, and for his education, he chose his dream school: UCSF. Kjeld Aamodt is the son of a single mother who can be aptly described as quaintly bohemian. Although no stranger to financial hardship, he has enjoyed a patchwork of blessings; he surfed in the waters of central California through his adolescence, played for Clint Eastwood's private parties as a jazz musician, hand-fed sharks as an aquarium scientific SCUBA diver through college, and got into his dream school, UCSF. He was voted “The Most Positive” in High School, and strives to put the people around him at ease.
He first imagined a career in music, encouraged by winning the Reno Jazz Festival, a showcase for promising school and college musicians. He considered marine biology after completing his bachelor’s degree in that field at UC San Diego. But he wanted to work with and help people directly, and of all the human health care professions, orthodontics seemed the best fit. “Orthodontics combines health care with art,” Kjeld says. “Our patients’ faces are our canvases, and those smiles are showcased every day and have meaning for everything our patients do.” As a resident, he studied orthodontics and craniofacial anomalies, treated patients, and conducted research. Kjeld’s research focused on how crooked teeth develop in indigenous peoples around the world. He believes that teeth everywhere are growing increasingly crooked, due to a combination of genetic causes and environmental influences in early childhood, which he would like to explore further. After 25 years of education, he’s excited to be joining Image Orthodontics.
