How Do Clear Aligners Work?

Clear aligners work by gradually shifting your teeth into their ideal positions. They use a series of custom-made, removable trays.

Each set of aligners is worn for about one to two weeks before switching to the next in the series. The trays apply gentle pressure to specific teeth based on your orthodontist’s treatment plan.

You’ll need to wear them for 20 to 22 hours per day for optimal results, removing them only to eat, brush, and floss.

With consistent use, clear aligners can effectively treat crowding, spacing, and bite issues.

Frequently Asked Questions About Clear Aligners

To remove your clear aligners, use your fingertips to gently lift them off from the back molars on each side. Then slowly work them forward.

Avoid pulling them out from the front first, as this could damage the aligner or cause discomfort. If you're having trouble, an aligner removal tool can help make the process easier and more hygienic. Always remove your aligners carefully to maintain their shape and effectiveness.

Many dental insurance plans do offer coverage for clear aligners, especially if orthodontic benefits are included. Coverage amounts and eligibility can vary depending on your specific plan and provider. In most cases, insurance will cover a portion of the cost, just as it would for traditional braces.

At Image Orthodontics, our team can help you review your benefits. We will provide a breakdown of your coverage so you know exactly what to expect.

Clear aligners work by using a series of custom-made trays that apply gentle, controlled pressure to your teeth. Each aligner is slightly different, gradually guiding your teeth into better alignment over time. You’ll wear each set for about one to two weeks before moving on to the next.

The treatment is carefully planned using advanced digital technology. That ensures that each movement is precise, effective, and as comfortable as possible.

For best results, you should wear your clear aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day.

They should only be removed when eating, drinking anything other than water, brushing, or flossing.

The total length of treatment varies depending on the complexity of your case. But most patients complete treatment within 6 to 18 months. Your orthodontist will give you a more accurate timeline based on your personalized treatment plan.

You should clean your clear aligners at least twice a day, ideally every time you brush your teeth.

Use a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented soap to gently clean them, then rinse with cool water. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the plastic.

You can also use specialized cleaning crystals or solutions for a deeper clean a few times a week. Keeping your aligners clean helps maintain oral hygiene and keeps your trays clear and odor-free.
